This is a geotouristic field-trip, showing the landscapes of the Arrabida Chain, located 30 km South of Lisbon. This mountain chain, also a unique Natural Reserve, has a Mediterranean climate and vegetation, quite different from the neighbouring areas. This trip will follow its crest, from the Castle of Palmela to its westernmost point, the Espichel Cape, with magnificent views particularly to the southern coast, where we will have a seaside lunch at Portinho. The landscape shows the influence of the alpine uplift and also of diapirism (Sesimbra) on the different Meso-Cenozoic geological units, presenting steep hills, narrow valleys, and long cuestas. Castles and churches are located at specific geological places and will be visited. This short trip will relate Structural and Sedimentary Geology to Geomorphology and Culture.
